DEF Common questions

What is DEF?

DEF is a clear, non-toxic, non-flammable liquid that's injected into the exhaust stream of a diesel engine. It's stored in a separate tank, usually located next to the diesel tank.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a precise mixture of urea and de-ionized water that is used in the SCR process. DEF is 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionized water, this mixture is very precise when blended.

Is DEF considered hazardous?

No, DEF is less hazardous than other fluids used in a truck, like diesel, brake fluid, and antifreeze. It's biodegradable and can be transported without a hazardous substance placard.

How do I store DEF and how long does it last?

Store DEF in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area in a container designed for DEF. Avoid storing it outdoors or in containers made of carbon steel, aluminum, copper, or zinc.

DEF can last at least one year if stored between 10° and 90° Fahrenheit. Storing it at 75° Fahrenheit can extend its shelf life to two years.
