Castrol Oil

The History of Castrol

On 19th March 1899, Charles 'Cheers' Wakefield founded an oil company in England. A decade later, he developed a groundbreaking lubricant that transformed transportation in the early 1900s. This revolutionary oil was named Castrol.

Castrol oil is associated with world speed and endurance records. From Malcolm Campbell's land and water speed records to Captain Alcock's non-stop Atlantic flight and the Mars Rover, Castrol is at the forefront of technology. With unparalleled quality and outstanding performance in harsh conditions, Castrol oils are still the top choice for motoring pioneers today.

By 1960, the Castrol brand was so well known that C.C.Wakefield renamed the company simply as Castrol Ltd, by 1966 the company was bought by The Burmah Oil Company and 1968 saw the launch of Castrol GTX. This was critically acclaimed by professional and public drivers alike. At this point, Castrol was available in service stations and garages in more than 140 countries worldwide. Up to this day, Castrol remained a major sponsor for motor sports and world record attempts. In the year 2000, Burmah Oil and Castrol became part of the BP group.
