Drivers still describe a treated windshield as “rain-x'd” — a nod to Rain-X's glass treatment that makes water bead up and slide off instead of pooling and smearing.

Howard Ohlhausen invented and patented the coating in Chicago in 1971, trademarking Rain-X in 1972 as one of the first commercially available invisible glass treatments. The brand moved through several owners over the decades — Quaker State, Pennzoil-Quaker State, Shell, and now Illinois Tool Works — and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022, still built around Ohlhausen's original idea.
