Walk into a NASCAR pit box and there's a decent chance a can of Spartan SD-20 is sitting in the toolbox — it's the multipurpose degreaser crews reach for to cut grease, brake dust, and tire residue fast, without eating into paint or plastic trim. That racing following sits on top of Spartan's much bigger business supplying professional-grade cleaning chemicals to industrial maintenance, fleet, and food-service operations nationwide.

The company got its start in May 1956, when E.T. Swigart Jr., Nord L. Simpson, and C.D. Werner opened a 1,500-square-foot shop on Summit Street in downtown Toledo, Ohio. Their first product, the HD-10 All Purpose Cleaner, was reformulated into what Swigart later called "the girl that brought us to the dance" — SD-20, still one of the company's signature products today. Spartan has since grown into a 600,000-plus-square-foot manufacturing campus in Maumee, Ohio, supporting more than 500 domestic distributors and 53 international partners across five continents.
