Thomas & Betts Ty-Rap

Ty-Rap holds a rare distinction in hardware: it's the brand that invented the category. Every plastic cable tie bundling wires under a dashboard, in a server rack, or along an aircraft harness traces back to this one product line, now made by ABB under the Thomas & Betts name.

The idea came from Maurus C. Logan, a Thomas & Betts engineer who, according to company history, noticed workers on a visit to a Boeing plant struggling to hand-lace wire harnesses with string. He developed a nylon strap-and-locking-head design instead, patented on June 24, 1958 — the first cable tie ever made. Nearly seven decades later, Ty-Rap ties are still manufactured to the same basic principle, now in weather- and UV-resistant nylon rated for outdoor and industrial use.
